Bobby Yu Shuk Pui and Jorunn Hancke Øgstad
Press release
BOBBY YU SHUK PUI is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, performer, director and filmmaker based between Hong Kong and Oslo.
Previous projects by Bobby have examined themes related to body politics and human genetic engineering through the mediums of text, performance, video, semi-fictional narratives and photographic works through which she describes memory and experiences of identification.
At June VI, VII presents the video “Genetic Salon I & II” (2021-2022) the moving image component of a project using speculative fiction within the themes of human genetic engineering to refigure perceptions towards gender, the body and historical discourses of identity. This video is presented alongside a selection of digital prints on porcelain tiles inspired by Hong Kongese memorial placards (瓷像) — ceramic tiles with portraits of the departed left at graves by loved ones of the deceased. The photographic images on Bobby’s tiles showcase key visual elements from the video’s production, underscoring the artist’s interest in collective practices, the potential for filmmaking to build intimate relationships and and the importance of the cast and crew behind the scenes. These works, which capture moments of intense personal and cultural reflection, present a unique blend of cinematic aesthetics with visual art practices. The materials selected to hold this photography—porcelain tiles and porcelain crystal—are deeply rooted in familial traditions from the artist’s hometown. These materials are traditionally used to preserve images from life’s most cherished family occasions, echoing the cultural narratives touched upon in the work.

JORUNN HANCKE ØGSTAD is a Norwegian artist exploring the language of abstraction through painting and sculpture. Using fabric dye, resin and plastics on unprimed canvas, the artist mimics watercolor, spray paint and print processes, often within the same work, co-opting techniques commonly found in expressionist, street and pop art practices.
Traversing historical periods in art and design, Øgstad finds inspiration everywhere from 19th century spiritual abstraction to the work of female contemporaries. Many of her works feature bleaching and blocking processes which see areas of the works become translucent, thereby
letting light through the surface of the work.
Born in 1979 in Bærum, Norway, Øgstad lives and works in Oslo. Notable solo exhibitions include Downpour, at Sandefjord Kunstforening; Oppgjørets time, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikkoden, Norway; Nye Malerier, Formuesforvaltning, Oslo; a 2019 presentation at Frieze London and Crocodile Tears at the Kunsthall Oslo, part of Munch on the Move, a series of exhibitions initiated by Norway’s Munch Museum.
Notable group exhibitions include Triangel at Haugar Art Museum, Tønsberg, Norway; …And Justice for All at VI, VII, Oslo. The artist’s works are in numerous private collections as well as public collections such as the Equinor Art Collection and the collections of KORO, Örebro Konsthall, Henie Onstad Art Center and Norway’s National Museum.
17 of the artists works are currently on view in Stockholm, in a public exhibition at the home of art patron Eva Livijn-Olin. Her work is also currently featured in “The Dimension of Feeling,” a digital exhibition on Vortic.art curated by Maria Korolevskaya.
