Trevor Shimizu
Press release
VI, VII is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition by American artist Trevor Shimizu in Norway.
In a practice that has spanned two decades, Shimuzu has produced video and paintings that have shifted away from portraiture in recent years to landscape paintings which capture nature, freely painted from every day life.
The artist lives an hour north of New York City, in upstate New York. Abstracted works like Ocean and Birds (2019) captures light on water in loose brushstrokes obfuscating any reference to detail. Representing tidal pools, Reef 1& 2 (2019) evoke the fertile, darker side of life by the sea, their broad strokes suggestive of life beneath the water.
The exhibition is part of a larger project that draws Edvard Munch’s graphic works into dialogue with the painting practice of a living artist whose work is expressive, energetic and timely, in much the way Munch’s was. Nine works by Munch will be presented in the space from May 23, for a number of days mid way through Shimizu’s exhibition.
