VI, VII is pleased to present “The Margin s mile of Welcome” by Norwegian artist, Jorunn Hancke Øgstad.
For her first solo exhibition at VI, VII Øgstad presents six new paintings made with fabric dye, acrylics and resin on canvas. The exhibition lends its title from a poem by Susan Howe,* an American poet and essayist recognized for her experimental writing in regards to sociological topics, and exclusion. Using the confines of language, Howe represents the exclusion of groups like women, indigenous populations and migrants by omitting pieces of her poems, allowing the threshold to be crossed through the act of reading.
In “The Margin s mile of Welcome,” Øgstad responds to Howe’s work, visually interpreting the poem through her process. Both Øgstad and Howe use layering, negative space and collage within their respective practices as a means to redefine this relationship between subject and object.
Over the past two decades, Øgstad has explored abstraction through painting and sculpture, drawing inspiration everywhere from 19th century spiritual abstraction to the work of female contemporaries, mixing different styles across each of her works.
Born in 1979 in Bærum, Norway, Øgstad lives and works in Oslo. Notable exhibitions include “Oppgjørets Time” Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikkoden; “Nye Malerier,” Formuesforvaltning, Oslo; a 2019 presentation at Frieze London and “Crocodile Tears” at the Kunsthall Oslo, part of “Munch on the Move,” a series of exhibitions initiated by Norway’s Munch Museum.
The artist’s works are in numerous private collections in Europe and America, as well as the collection of Henie Onstad Art Center and Norway’s National Museum.
