Landscape Without Horizon
28.02.2019 – 30.03.2019
VI, VII is pleased to announce ‘Landscape No Horizon,’ Hamburg based collective, Jochen Schmith’s third exhibition at the gallery.
Working together since the final year of their studies, artists Peter Steckroth and Carola Wagonplast, have worked together under the name Jochen Schmith since the year 2000. Peter Hoppe was an active member until 2016.
Jochen Schmith’s work explores social rituals and public spaces. Particular interest is placed on the way forms of presentation are connected with structures of power and domination.
At the center of their current exhibition are works from an ongoing series of abstract compositions known as ‘picnic blankets.’ These works are carefully composed from shredded euro bank notes and are cartographic representations of different parks.
Each artwork in this series represents a public garden or a park that has either recently, or in ancient times, been privatized. The titles of the works are taken from a survey into leisure conducted by an architectural association and represents the way those polled prefer to make use of their free time.
These are joined by two framed works featuring unprinted, one-way vision foil on glass over a photograph of the BlackRock investment building in New York. Layers of meshed foil, normally used for advertisements on public transportation buses and shop windows slows reception of the image down. The title, ‘Untitled (Aladdin)’ is borrowed from both the Middle Eastern folk tale, ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ as well as the title of a widely-used software and electronic system for handling assets.
Jochen Schmith is a collective based in Hamburg, Germany.
Their works have been shown internationally at notable institutions such as Hamburg Kunstverein, Kunsthaus Bregenz and Bundeskunsthalle Bonn.
Previous exhibitions include: JED MARTIN curated by Bettina Steinbrügge at Kunstverein Hamburg; Artists against Aids curated by Yilmaz Dziewior at Bundeskunsthalle Bonn; Enjoy the Sun, VI, VII, Oslo, Jochen Schmith, Galerie Esther Donatz, Munich; Present Gifts, VI, VII, Oslo; Utopie beginnt im Kleinen, Triennale Kleinplastik Fellbach; Andere Räume, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn; Bleibender Wert?, Kunsthaus Bregenz; Grand Openings Pt. 1, Mathew, Berlin; Certain Arrangements, Kunstverein Braunschweig (2010); News from Nowhere, WCW Gallery, Hamburg.
