Lives and works in Athens
Sebastian Lloyd Rees (b. 1986, Stavanger, Norway) is a British and Norwegian artist currently based between Athens and Soriano Nel Cimino, Italy. He has a BFA from Goldsmiths University, London.
Made with industrial paint, Lloyd Rees’ wildly expressive paintings are marked by spontaneous gestures that translate the artist’s experiences of urban life, with all its vivid and transient atmospheres. His practice also involves appropriation and assemblage made with discarded building materials from demolition sites.
Placing emphasis on his own mark making and experience living in metropolises, Lloyd Rees brings the viewer into physical and emotional contact with the often overlooked attributes of cities, translating them into lines, textures, and surfaces.
Recent exhibitions include Condo London, Mother’s Tankstation, London; Vacant Lots, Mother’s Tankstation, London; Vendor, Room East, New York; L’albero della cuccagna, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Open Source: Art at the Eclipse
of Capitalism, Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin.
Since 2008, and together with Ali Eisa, Lloyd Rees has been one half of Lloyd Corporation, a collaborative artistic duo that has staged projects at Carlos/ Ishikawa, London; South London Gallery; Raven Row, London; Prada Foundation / Qatar Museum Authorities, Athens; Frieze London’s Live Projects and Mirror City, Hayward Gallery, London.
